Age of Steam Roundhouse –

After the successful development of his short line railroad system and it’s recent sale, our now retired client needed storage and repair facilities for his large collection of historic steam locomotives and “first generation” diesel locomotives. The result is America’s first locomotive roundhouse since the 1940′s. It is a 48,000 square feet building of solid masonry walls and heavy timber framing with 18 stalls each large enough for a locomotive and it’s tender. It will be one of the largest heavy timber structures in America. Attached is an 18,700 square feet steel & masonry backshop building for locomotive repair and restoration. The backshop is accessible by rail from Stall #1 of the roundhouse. A 30 ton capacity overhead crane traverses the length of the backshop while a drop pit equipped with lifting machinery for removal and service of locomotive wheels extends 14′ down from the shop floor into the subgrade.

The Info Depot Conference Center

is a multiple phase historic railroad themed project where we prepared a comprehensive site plan which integrates a relocated & renovated small town railroad station building, a Northern Pacific Railroad dining car, a protective canopy for an historic Georgia & Florida Railroad business car, a 1909 Central of Vermont wood caboose and appropriately themed improvements to the main building’s existing facade. The station building, originally serving the Toledo & Ohio Central Railroad (now NS), was disassembled and moved in pieces from its 100 year location in Brice near Reynoldsburg, Ohio and reassembled and rehabilitated to become a 55 person capacity state-of-the-art conference-meeting center for the Info Depot. A period railroad theme was maintained throughout. The ceiling is original red pine bead board and the floors hand-hewn hickory.

The station building rehabilitation demonstrates the situation found with many historic structures where they may be an iconic building of great imagery and romance but may be found in poor structural condition. The deteriorated wood frame of this building served chiefly as a pattern for the extensive rebuilding necessary to prepare it for its next 100 years of use.

Athens Station

An adaptive reuse and rehabilitation of an original wood frame Baltimore and Ohio Railroad passenger depot into modern office space. The entire exterior shell was saved and refurbished. New siding was specially milled to match the existing original siding. The owner developed plans to add new office buildings to the site. Their design will follow the historic preservation architectural design principle of harmonizing with but not duplicating the historic building. The site was planned to meet modern needs but to remember its history well. The parking lot paving retains a vestige of the original railway track long since removed and once used by the Hocking Valley Railway.

Hocking Valley Scenic Railway

An 8000 sf pre-engineered steel building that provides basic low cost interior work and storage space for a small non-profit railway company. The insulated building includes interior lighting and a concrete pit under track #1 for inspection and repair of locomotive and car trucks and undercarriages. The trackage was installed by the company’s volunteer work forces. Architectural services for the company were pro-bono.
